How I Learned SEO
I started learning about Search Engine Optimization, SEO, 6 years ago when I wanted to make more money from my Survivor TV Show fan site at www.survivor.com.
I originally built the site as a favor for a friend in 1995, for his software company, trying to build up my portfolio.
When the TV show became a huge hit in 2000, people were just typing in “survivor” and finding the site that way, before search engines were used much. The site got a lot of traffic that way.
Around 2004 or 2005, people really started using search engines to find things, instead of just typing in a domain name.
I Had Almost No Traffic
My traffic numbers fell off dramatically. I checked the search engines. The site was languishing at the bottom on the second page.
I needed more traffic. I was desperate.

I started doing research about SEO. I read some books. I bought some training courses (not cheap ones, either!)
Most of it was technical, but I was a web developer, so I understood what they were talking about.
I Figured It Out!
It still took a while to figure out exactly how to apply everything to my site. There were no real “step by step” instructions.
I tried to apply what I learned to the site. I tested and tweaked.
It took a couple years and a lot of hard work, but today, that site ranks above all other sites, except the official CBS site, and gets about half a million page views per month.
