WordPress can be extended – with themes and plugins – to suit almost any purpose. I know just enough about PHP to be dangerous but someone like myself can often modify the code without destroying the thing, too. WordPress was really a revolutionary design. Conceived as simply a blogging platform, it’s become a full-featured CMS – and easier for most people to install and manage than the various alternatives (for instance, Drupal – ack!). I actually decided to learn some PHP – and have actually developed pretty decent skills – after trying to learn Drupal. It was sufficiently complicated that I had an epiphany: if I’m going to learn Drupal (which is a steep learning curve), why not just spend that time – instead – learning PHP? So I have to thank Drupal for teaching me something – but WordPress rules… Nice points in the article, especially for new web people.
